Leeds Arts University has a long history of teaching the arts. The University has roots dating back to 1846 and the original Leeds School of Art. In 1842 the Leeds Mechanics Institute merged with the Literary Society, which led to the formation of The Leeds Government School Design four years later. In 1903 the School moved to Vernon Street which is the same building which our Foundation Diploma students are taught in today. In the late 1920s the art school became known as Leeds College of Art. In the mid-1980s our Blenheim Walk building was erected enabling the College to further expand. In 2017 the College gained University title becoming Leeds Arts University, the only specialist arts university in the North of England.Our £22m state-of-the-art building expansion was completed in 2019 in order to widen our course offering and benefit our students. We are proud to have produced many fantastic, successful alumni. Some well known artists who have studied at Leeds Arts University include: - Henry Moore is arguably one of the most famous sculptors that ever lived. This iconic British artist studied at Leeds Arts University in his early years, before going on to produce many world famous, monumental semi-abstract bronze sculptures. He was internationally celebrated during his life, and his art gallery is located in Leeds City Centre. - Barbara Hepworth was a famous British artist and modernist sculptor. She was an international figure, exhibiting her work across the world. She was a pioneer of the avant-garde method of direct carving, and famous for being a successful woman in what was a male-dominated art scene. - Marcus Harvey is a famous artist and painter, and one of the ‘Young British Artists’. He is famous for producing highly worked figurative paintings and sculptures, often using controversial subject matter. - Damien Hirst is reportedly the UK’s richest living artist. He is one of the ‘Young British Artists’, and has produced many famous artworks including installations, sculptures, paintings, and drawings. One of his most famous artworks was a preserved shark in a glass tank. - Danny Sangra is an established artist, illustrator & director, Danny has collaborated with brands such as the BBC, Marc by Marc Jacobs, Mulberry, Louis Vuitton and Show Studio, and has shown solo exhibitions in London, Europe, Tokyo and New York. - Omar Kashoura is a menswear designer who's collections have appeared at London Fashion Week, and in many famous magazines.

We have several scholarships available for students. If you choose to study on our Foundation Diploma course and progress to an Undergraduate course here at LAU, you will automatically qualify for the International Progression Award. This is a tuition fee reduction of £1,750 for each of the 3 years of study - a total of £5,250 reduction in total. For students entering Undergraduate level study, we also have 7 x £2,000 scholarships are available as a tuition fee discount for the first year of study for students entering the first year of a three year degree. Postgraduate students can also apply for one of our scholarships. There are five £3,000 scholarships available as a tuition fee reduction. All students will be required to submit a digital portfolio of work as part of their application. Students completing the Senior Secondary School in China with a Senior Secondary School Graduation Certificate will need to take an additional course before applying for an undergraduate degree at Leeds Arts University. This will usually be achieved by completing a recognised foundation course, such as our Foundation Diploma in Art & Design, or other comparable qualification. Students who have completed the Chinese University Entrance Examination (Gaokao) and have achieved good grades will be considered for entry onto our undergraduate courses. Each application will require a strong portfolio of art/design work, plus evidence of your English Language ability equivalent to IELTS 5.5 with no component less than 5.5. Please see English Language for details of accepted qualifications.

Successful completion of an undergraduate degree from a recognised institution, normally in a relevant subject or a relevant professional qualification at an equivalent level, supported by a portfolio of work. Candidates holding other academic qualifications will also be considered for admission provided they have substantial relevant professional experience and a portfolio of work. Plus evidence of your English Language ability equivalent to IELTS 6.0.

If you are having any difficulties which are impacting your ability to make an application to our university, please get in touch. We appreciate the many difficulties students have faced in the past year due to the COVID-19 situation, such as school closures, less access to resources, illness and stress. You can now apply for your visa up to 6 months before your course begins. Once you have accepted your offer to study at Leeds Arts University, the International Team will be in touch regarding your visa, and will help you with each step of the process.

Here at LAU, we work closely with 3 accommodation providers in the city of Leeds, and we recommend that our students choose to live in one of these 3 buildings. These buildings are: Hepworth Lodge, IQ Leeds and Carr Mills. More information on these can be found here.
All students who have accepted a place on one of our courses will be emailed with further information about the accommodation booking process.
If a student would like to select their own accommodation (this could be within a private student accommodation building, a rental property or similar) then they of course can do so. There are many accommodation options within the city at varying prices, some only a few minutes’ walk from campus. The International Team at LAU will assist you with each step of the visa process. Once you accept your place, the team will be in touch and ask for any required documents in order to make your offer 'Unconditional'. Once these are sent, the team will advise you on when and how to provide any additional documents required (such as proof of deposit payment, ID, tuberculosis test certfificate) to be able to issue your 'CAS'. Once you have received your CAS, you can apply for your visa. Please try not to worry about the visa process, as the International Team will be on hand to offer advice every step of the way and inform you of timings.

LAU provides a 'meet and greet' service for students arriving into Leeds Bradford International Airport, and Leeds Train Station. We can accompany you to your accommodation and ensure you check in and settle in well. If you accept your place, we will send you further information on this closer to your arrival date.

How early you arrive in the UK will depend on a number of factors - the date of entry on your vignette, your accommodation contract beginning and the date your course begins. If you are unsure of when to arrive, please contact the International Team and they would be delighted to help.

After arriving in the UK, you will be required to collect your 'BRP' from a local Post Office within 10 days of arriving. If you are under 18, please contact the International Team and we can assist you with collection. You will also be required to register with the police. We reccomend you register with a doctor to ensure you are able to access healthcare easily if you were to become unwell. Please don't worry about making note of these things now, as you will be thoroughly briefed during your Welcome Week on all of your responsibilites.

At Leeds Arts University, we enrol new students each September. We do not have a January intake. Enrolment usually happens in mid-September and begins with a welcome day for international students. We will inform you of your specific requirements prior to enrolment. On the day of enrolment, prepare yourself for a fun and informative day - usually this involves presentations, ice breaker sessions and city / campus tours.

Over the last year our students have been following a blended approach to their learning, attending classes both in person and online. When the new, temporary restrictions were announced in England in January 2021 this meant we already had everything in place to facilitate a quick move to deliver our teaching entirely online.
On campus teaching will resume as soon as Government guidance allows. One-to-one contact with staff and opportunities to work in small groups, with and without staff, are central to our teaching and learning. These practices will continue to be facilitated online through video conferencing until we are allowed to reopen our campus buildings for face to face teaching. Live video briefings, events, critiques, seminars and recordings of lectures that are backed up by live discussions are also part of our practices.
Unfortunately it is too early to tell what the situation will be in September, however with the continued success of the vaccination programme here in the UK, we are hopeful that restrictions will be lifted, and we are able to welcome new international students to the UK to study in person. Please rest assured the safety of our students and staff is our highest priority and this will always be at the forefront of any decisions that we make.

We are carrying out our own track and trace system on campus alongside national efforts. When a student or staff member notifies us that they have symptoms or are self-isolating because someone they live with has symptoms we will contact them.

There is a now a requirement for arrivals from many countries to quarantine for 14 days after arriving into the UK. For the latest guidance, please visit the gov.uk website. Please be assured that if you are required to self isolate on arrival, our university can support you in many ways - such as with online classes, online welcome events, making friends, and food deliveries.

LAU is providing a high level of support to all students during this difficult time. Students can reach out to many different teams, including: - Student Welfare can provide advice and support on a huge range of issues, from difficulties completing work, to loneliness, isolation, mental health issues, money problems and more. - Course teams can assist if a student is finding their course difficult, including arranging extra support sessions, providing online help if a student is in isolation, and more. -The International Team is providing many additional services to students including support and advice, meet and greet services at airports, delivering food parcels, providing SIM cards and helping with setting up bank accounts. -The Students' Union can assist with making friends and settling in. They are hosting events (both online and offline), sporting activities for physical health and have a 'make a connection' campaign where students can be matched with others to be friends with.

We are currently using a 'blended' approach to teaching, with some face to face, on-campus classes, supported by some online learning. Some overseas students may wish to be taught purely online for a period of time. These may include students who live outside the UK and have travel restrictions or have to quarantine when they arrive. We may be able to accommodate this on a case-by-case basis. Any student who would like to apply for this should contact the or the International Team in the first instance. We recommend checking leeds-art.ac.uk for the latest teaching plan. We are following the latest government guidelines. We have the flexibility to adjust if social distancing rules are relaxed and we will amend our protocols and allow more people into our workshops and studios. Should more restrictive measures be introduced we are also prepared for this and we are able to support our student community as necessary.

We are carrying out our own track and trace system alongside national efforts. When you notify us that you have symptoms or are self-isolating because someone you live with has symptoms we will send you a link to an online form to complete and this will be followed up with a phone call. Leeds has a number of testing centres that can be booked through the NHS site. The recommended testing centre for students is at the Gryphon Sports Centre (University of Leeds campus, Woodsley Road, LS2 9LZ). The Gryphon walk-through testing centre is open seven days a week from 8am until 8pm.

We have followed certain principles when timetabling for 20/2021 such as:
1. Briefs not dependent on specific facilities but designed to develop the core skills, knowledge and understanding required by module specifications;
2. Where outputs in the form of made artefacts or work are required, carefully considering their form in order to minimise the cost to students of producing them;
3. All submissions for assessment will be digital to ensure that courses can operate under any of the circumstances that the changing environment may bring. This does not mean that outcomes will not be practical, but that the actual submission will be digital, for instance photographs of an artefact or a recording of a performance.

In addition we are ensuring that core components of our teaching such as one-to-one contact with staff and opportunities to work in small groups are able to still be replicated online. We hope that by taking this approach, we have minimised the impact of the COVID-19 situation on students’ learning.

Leeds Arts University offers one Foundation course – our Foundation Diploma in Art and Design. This is a very well-respected course, with previous students on this course including Damien Hirst and Henry Moore. This one year, intensive course prepares students for Undergraduate study. Students will learn a range of different artistic practices, before selecting one area to specialise in. Completing the Foundation Diploma would support your application for an Undergraduate programme as you start to build a very strong portfolio, and you will be assisted with your applications. There are also progression awards (in the form of a tuition fee discount) for students going from a Foundation Diploma to an Undergraduate Degree at our University, where you save £1,750 per year for all three years of your Undergraduate course.

Leeds Arts University offers a pre-sessional summer course for international students who have received an offer of a place for study at undergraduate or postgraduate level but are 0.5 below their IELTS entry requirements (if you intend to study the pre-sessional course we recommend you take the IELTS for UKVI version of the IELTS test).
This intensive six-week course focuses on all aspects of English that you will need to succeed at the University, from building your confidence in English to presentation skills and academic writing. The course is taught on campus, so you will get to know the University and settle into life in Leeds before your degree programme starts.
It is not all hard work though, with a trip to the cinema, Leeds Museum and a day trip to Whitby included.
Successful completion of the course means you will not need to retake IELTS – you will be able to progress straight to your degree course.
